October 7th 2020
The people are fed-up, they are being robbed and killed by the people who are meant to protect them. We live in a country where we do not even have the basics provided to us by the government, water, electricity and even security.
The people are not asking for much really, they just don’t want get harassed, robbed or killed by the police.
A peaceful protest by the people to make demands to the government they pay taxes to. Well here is the timeline of how it turned out.
Oct 7, 2020 - Offline Protest Begins
Nigerians in Lagos State started a 3 day peaceful protest by staying up outside the police force headquarters.
Knowing Nigeria, I have to respect the amount of guts this took. You guys have my undying love and respect. Thank you.
They also camped outside the House of Assembly in Lagos. The plan was to pass the message that they did not feel safe in their homes.
Was this enough? Was this the end?
Oct 10, 2020 - Jimoh Isiaq is killed
As usual, the promises of the people in power is nothing but lies.
The protest extends to a few more states in the county including Edo, Delta and Oyo state. Several protest points are communicated on twitter.
Twitter us also used to crowd fund the movement. From payment links, to people donating to certain accounts and also people sending money to individuals for transportation to the protest venue as well as buying people data to keep the protest online alive. An amazing sense of unity.
People show up in large numbers from the information communicated online. The House of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) are part of the places people show up at. What happens next?
In FCT, the police gang up with the SARS and start attacking protesters in the FCT by:
Throwing teargas
Shooting at them with water cannons
Shooting openly in the air with live ammunition
Beating people up mercilessly ( it is crazy to see that people are being beaten up for the exact thing they came to protest against)
Unlawfully arresting innocent protestors
Detaining protestors with false allegations
And in OGBOMOSHO? — Jimoh Isiaq is killed by the people who are meant to protect him.
Oct 11, 2020 - The Protest Wave Hits More Places
Nigerians in diaspora protest, from UK, USA, Germany, Canada & Poland. The protest is peaceful and they are able to state their displeasure without anyone getting harmed.
Back home in Ibadan State, the police starts shooting at protesters again, which leads to the death of 10 people, including a 10 year old child.
The protesters see the injustice and strengthen their resolve to see SARS ( in all honesty is should be called SRS) gets disbanded and for a complete reform of the police force. That same day the Inspector General of Police (IGP) announces that SARS has been “dissolved”.
Ever Played 4 Pics 1 Word?
The word here is “Lie”.
This did not stop the protest because Nigerians are tired of the IG saying SRS is no more and then getting robbed by them the following week. This time real action was demanded. The first step is hearing it from the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
Oct 12, 2020 - Things get worse.
It starts off with 4 innocent protesters being killed in Surulere Lagos. Although other sources say one of the people killed was a driver who came down to observe what was going on. People are getting arrested and killed.
More innocent people are being arrested and framed for murder. It is clear that despite the words of the IG the Police are going ahead to do what they want. Gunshots are fired at protesters at the Lagos airport and at tollgate.
The President of the county drops a video via his official Twitter handle (hello Tolu), echoing what the IG has already said but without dropping a clear action point, or an executive order.
How did the county get here? What is the way out?
