Clearly, it seems like the #ENDSARS protest has the seeds to split this country apart. I am not thinking too much about the worst-case scenario but if I am, I will say Nigerians may become refugees soon. Syria, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, countries who have had rebellion tear them apart have been floating into my mind all week.
At October 13, I am at my desk trying to fill in my quota of the day job before I call my friends on the front to support them in any way I can and I remember the Lagos State Governor’s sentiments the day before, “Tensions are high on both sides. Take a break from the protest tomorrow.” What the hell does that even mean?
There are people out there fighting for their lives and the state governor, who should be the mediator between his people and the dragon that is the Federal Government is trying to slow their momentum? We are seriously alone in this!
Let it be on the record that not all organizations are supporting us. Most of the banks are quite. It is only the startups that belong to young people that are using their voice to amplify our message and they can be counted on two hands. In this day and age where brands are a new religion, where some of the protest tweets are mentioning brands, I think that it is a shame that Nigeria’s heavy hitters are mum on the topic. It as if, they feel we would not succeed. To them, we must be like children throwing tantrums. They must feel like we can be exterminated at any time. This sentiment probably fuels the fire even more.
When we get what we want, we will revisit some of these issues.
Good morning.
