“birds born in cages think freedom is a crime”
My brother led prayers this morning and he asked for the end of SARS and police brutality and my father didn’t join the rest of us to chorus a loud amen. Not surprised but disappointed, these past days has been filled with a lot of disappointments, people we assumed had voices and we hoped would raise their voices, come up with excuses as to why they can’t come out to protest, why they can’t talk about what is going on, why they choose to live as though what is going on, the fire that is burning so violently and brightly isn’t any of their business or they aren’t being affected in any way.
so to those who feel that our protest is an act of rebellion and we have no right to ask for freedom that we so rightly deserve, I ask, how long have you stayed in that cage? how long have you accepted that a dysfunctional country is okay as long as you are alive? the whole “we are shaa alive!” talk has kept us from asking and crying out for freedom, for justice. Why have we swallowed everything the government has thrown at us and we choose to manage every thing? Mange poor electricity, manage bad roads, manage poor educational systems, management harassments, manage discrimination, manage poor health systems, manage wicked leaders, manage every damn thing!!! BUT THEY ARE NOT MANAGING!!! WHY SHOULD WE???
I am calm…
Close your eyes for just one minute and ask yourself why you want to move to Canada? why do you want to study in Germany? why do you want to leave Nigeria so badly? when you are able to answer the WHY then you will in some way understand why we are fighting(why you should fight) and why we will continue to fight till we get what we want.
Join the fight, if you can’t be present for the protest physically, talk about it online, use the hashtags, retweet, retweet, retweet.
