A million thanks won't be enough to thank you.
We started this struggle last week and we haven't backed down. If anything, we have only grown bigger. This could not have happened without you.
For the first time in my life, I’m proud to be a Nigerian youth.
I was raised to be apathetic. It’s not just me, the majority of our parents raised their kids to be that way. We were raised to look out for ourselves and ourselves only, give thanks when things work for us even though they are not working for other people, not concern ourselves with politics because everyone in politics is monstrous and a thief, and to look away when the law is being broken because “are you the only one who knows the law?”
But that’s ending now. I love that we are challenging all that was drilled into us. It’s refreshing, dangerous, exciting, satisfying. We are taking our country back! We are taking back the country we have never enjoyed and we are dismantling the systems designed to keep us down. We are loud, we are strong, we are brilliant, we are hurt, we are tired, we are resolute, we have the guts and we are doing this! We are challenging everyone and everything with no regard for your status. If you want respect from us, show workings.
I love it and I’m proud of it. I’m proud of the protesters across the country who have been going out every day, risking their lives to pass the message across. I’m proud of the vendors who have been supplying the protest grounds with the basics: food, water, fruits, snacks. I’m proud of the medical practitioners who have been working round the clock to be on top of health issues arising from the protests. I’m proud of the lawyers who have been working constantly and tirelessly against a rotten system. I’m proud of the entirety of the youth media who have been making deliberate efforts to ensure that this movement is properly documented. I’m proud of the feminists who have gallantly been fighting this fight. I’m proud of the men who have been standing strong. I’m proud of the Twitter warriors for keeping the hashtags on the trend tables. I’m proud of the business owners and individuals who have supported us in one way or the other – free protest materials, letting us hide etc. I’m proud of the youth-owned institutions that are fully supporting the movement. Piggybank, Flutterwave, Kudabank and others, we are with you and we always will be. I’m proud of the youth for not getting distracted. I’m so proud I just might burst.
We are more united than we have ever been right now and it’s beautiful to see. For now, all our differences are shelved and we are together. Look how much we have achieved. They have tried to distract us and they haven’t stopped. They won’t stop because they are scared of how powerful we currently are and how powerful we are still yet to become. We cannot afford to humour them. They will try their hardest to break us apart; to turn us against each other. But as the erudite heroine in the video said, “WE PIN!” We know what we are fighting for and we are prepared to go all the way.
This is an appreciation post. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of this in one way or the other. History will neither forget you nor be unkind to you.
We move.
We gather deyyyy! ✊🏾❤️
